The SWIFT code is 8 or 11 characters, made up of: 4 letters: Institution Code or bank code. The latest edition is ISO 9362:2009 (dated 2009-10-01). In a nutshell the SWIFT code is a unique bank code used for all interbank messaging. This month, the UK Financial Services Authority (FSA) has indicated that transaction reporting firms under MiFID will need to obtain a bank identifier code (BIC) in order to be in compliance with wider European level regulations.
