It is not the only coding system for banks - individual countries also have their own sets of codes which are used to identify banks in national interbank business. SEPA payments require both BIC and IBAN. It was created in 1973 supported by 239 banks in 15 countries. The regulator has also stated that the launch of the enhanced transaction reporting and market surveillance system incorporating the Alternative Instrument Identifier (AII) has been delayed indefinitely.
