If you have need to send money from one bank to another especially for international transfers, a SWIFT code is required. For example, ABA numbers (or routing codes) identify banks in the US and Canada, Sort Codes identify banks in the UK.
This is going to be a real hassle to start your car or jump on your scooter to go to the nearest bank and once you got there, you find yourself standing in a very long queue. The latest edition is ISO 9362:2009 (dated 2009-10-01). SEPA payments require both BIC and IBAN. The Swift numbers are valid worldwide.
