In a nutshell the SWIFT code is a unique bank code used for all interbank messaging.
The BIC is required to be included in all messages between the banks using the Swift network. BIC + IBAN is not available in the United States of America, nor is it likely to be, with the decentralized structure of the US banking system and lack of nationwide banks. For example, DEUTDEFF500 would direct the payment to an office of Deutsche Bank in Bad Homburg.
