It is the unique identification code of a particular bank. The SWIFT Bank Identification Code is an internationally-recognized system of codes for identifying banks (see ISO 9362). SWIFT stands for Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication - a banking industry intranet for worldwide communications and funds transfer. BIC are the same thing and are interchangeable terms.
